A Border Wall Can Make a Statement
In an age of globalism, a border wall can make a statement that countries do matter. Unfortunately, many of America’s elites don’t see things this way. The Council on Foreign Relations, and organization of this country’s movers and shakers, posted a position paper on its website suggesting integration of the United States, Mexico and Canada. This agenda seems to be taking shape in the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) forged by the U.S., Mexican and Canadian governments. Many U.S. leaders, in their indifference to illegal immigration, certainly give the impression that the sovereignty of our country is not a big issue in their minds.
Nor is it much of an issue with Mexican leaders who encourage illegal immigration in various ways. Said former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, “I have proudly affirmed that the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders and that Mexican migrants are an important—a very important—part of it.” Many of his countrymen also have a low regard for U.S. sovereignty. A Zogby International poll in 2002 found that 58 percent of Mexicans believe that our southwestern states properly belong to Mexico.
Given the forces that want to ignore the U.S. Mexican border, patriotic Americans have good reason to want a strong border wall and fencing. These barriers would make the statement in a very tangible way that most Americans want America to remain a distinct and sovereign country.
